The 30 years journey of the Internet

The Begining of a Revolution

The Internet as we see it today was completely different back in the late 1980s. The idea was developed in the Cold War era when both the USA & USSR were in a technical race and to showcase their greatness in the Scientific world.

The concept of the Internet begins with the development of electronic computers in the 1950s. Initial concepts of wide area networking originated in several computer science laboratories in the United States, United Kingdom, and France. The U.S. Department of Defense developed the ARPANET project, directed by Robert Taylor and managed by Lawrence Roberts. The first message was sent over the ARPANET in 1969 and became operational.

In the 1980s, researchers at CERN in Switzerland, the British computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee resulted in the World Wide Web (the base & schema of the Internet), linking hypertext documents into an information system, accessible from any node on the network. And from 1993 onwards it was available to be used all over the world by anyone for free.

In December 1990, an application called WorldWideWeb was developed on a NeXT machine at The European Organization for Nuclear Research (known as CERN) just outside of Geneva. This program – WorldWideWeb — is the antecedent of most of what we consider or know of as "the web" or "the Net" today.

The 1st website that was made live for CERN was http://info.cern.ch/ It was for the scientists at CERN so they can easily upload and share their data and works.

Role of the Internet

The Internet is the biggest world-wide communication network of computers and computing devices. The Internet has millions of smaller domestic, academic, business, commercial and government networks, which together carry many different kinds of information. The term is sometimes abbreviated as "the Net". The World Wide Web is one of its biggest services. It is used by billions of people all over the world and each day the users are growing.

The Internet is used for a lot of services nowadays, from file sharing to documents handling, to information sharing to entertainment, from business to e-commerce sites, from complex web applications to microblogging and social media sites.

Now each and everything is present on the Internet. From an MNC to Governments, from a celebrity to an ordinary person, all are connected with the Internet.

After the advent of Smartphones and superfast data services in 4G, broadband, WiFi and beyond the reach of the Internet has increased manifold.

The Journey So far

From the laboratories of CERN to the palm of a kid the Internet has changed a lot. The HTTP (Hyper-text Transfer Protocol) and the HTML (Hypertext markup language) which makes the bare bone of websites has gone a lot of changes.

The World Wide Web is governed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) which was Developed by Tim Berners-Lee which sets the guidelines and syntax of the websites.

The websites and the internet have now become:
  • Available on any device, for any type of information,
  • Available in any language.
  • Accessible by people with disabilities.
  • Royalty-free and built on open standards.
  • Powerful application
  • Huge visual appeal and User experience (UX)

The earliest browser was The Netscape browser (in 1992), then later I.E. came a couple of years later with the windows OS. Later in early 200s Mozilla and safari came with the latest Web browser and in 2008 Google Chrome was introduced.

The popular brands of today like Amazon, Google, Wikipedia, Facebook etc. started in 1994, 1998, 2001, 2005 respectively.

Internet uses lots of programming languages like HTML, CSS, Java, JavaScript, JQuery, PHP, ASP.NET, Python, Angular and many more to get our desired websites.

The countries like the USA, China, and India are leading the number of charts with the most nos. of websites and users. Also, the developing world now is getting more users on the Internet each day.

The Challenges and the Road Ahead

Websites and the Internet have made a room in our day-to-day life. We are dependent on the Internet for information, file/data sharing, online chatting, entertainment and live streaming of videos and music, doing online transactions and e-shopping amongst many more.

But there are challenges too:

  • Some webpages may trick people into downloading viruses or malware that can harm one's computer or spyware that spies on its users (looks at what they are doing and tells someone else).
  • E-mails and messages can also have harmful files with them as "attachments", which can crash your system or get your personal details.
  • In internet chatrooms, people might be preying on others or trying to stalk or abuse them or troll others.
  • The Internet contains content that many people find offensive such as pornography, as well as content intended to be offensive.
  • Criminals and scammers may steal people's personal information or trick people into sending them money.
  • Blue Whale and Momo Game trick young ones to oblivion.
  • Hacking of personal sites and company profiles.
Also, there is a world of Dark Web where all sort of illegal practices takes place, from child pornography to illegal arms trade to trade of narcotics etc. to Cryptocurrencies and many immoral and illegal activities are done within the confines of worlds wide web.

The recent rise of ISIS, fundamentalism, and terrorism was attributed to the role of the Internet and various illegal groups carry out their activities and get more recruits through the Internet.

The debate about Net-neutrality and the role of governments across the world has a role to play in the future.

Are free Websites really free?

Designmysites

Free Websites, A Myth?

Before we dive into the world of websites, I have a question for you, Is there a free meal in this world? You would probably say NO. Well, nothing comes free in this world of ours, except for the mother's love and care.

Same as in the case of websites too. There is nothing called Free Websites.

But you would argue that you have come across lots of ads regarding the free websites, or free website builder, free hosting and free web services. Each time you open Youtube, Google, Yahoo, or any other website you are popped with lots of free website ads.

Same is the case when you get the ads in print media or on TV etc.

Then how come they are free?

Well, these website builders or web services are actually used to promote their own company instead of yours. It's, never for professional use.
These free websites come with a lot of hidden costs and other service fee and taxes.

These companies provide you with a subdomain of theirs and then host your nascent website in a bulk, into their one folder. Which cramps the already distorted website further and makes it hard to access.

The disadvantage of Free website

Following is a list of all the features that you lack when you opt for a free website:

1. Websites are not really free
2. You have to pay monthly, yearly fees & other hidden costs
3. The free website is not professional
4. You don’t get a registered domain
5. A lot of adds pop-up on your website
6. Cannot customize according to your need
7. No one to help you in need, No support
8. You still need some coding knowledge
9. Not for layman's
10. Limited bandwidth, hence slow
11. Not for commercial purposes
12. Not responsive sites, so website hangs or distorts in mobile or tab
13. Not helpful in SEO
14. Custom functionalities cannot be installed
15. You need to take the headache to make it live
16. You need to invest your valuable time in the process
17. A bad/non-professional website will alienate your existing customers too.
18. They can lock down your data
19. The website can disappear at anytime
20. They can sell your information
21. Limited WordPress functions
22. Malware distribution
23. Vulnerable to hacking attempts
24. Limited design choices
25. There are no backups for your site
26. No statistics or decent analytics
27. No responsive designs
28. No branded email

Thus, the free website is not for a business or profession, neither it's for a person who wants to use it for personal use as a portfolio or blog etc.
At most these services can be used by a kid who wants to know something about websites. And can play with the web pages.

These free websites are infested with various ads, and also insecure as anyone can access your data and you can be robbed out of your all personal & professional details. Also, you will be bombarded with a lot of spam emails and calls. As your details are sold to other companies by these websites.

And also for creating these free websites, you need someone who has a firm knowledge in computers and an eye in website designing.

The amazing world of Artificial Intelligence

What Is Artificial Intelligence?

Designmysites

We are surrounded by computers and machines every day. From the smartphone to the traffic lights and to the airport all we use is machines and computer-based systems. All our daily needs are taken care of by the computers. Even this blog is powered by a computer. And the more the computer is advanced, more is our productivity and economy.

As the Sci-fi movies revolve around the AI and machines taking over humanity, where the machines start to rule and humans fight for their survival. Well, it sure sounds intriguing but is it really so?

Well, what is Artificial intelligence or AI?

In computer science, artificial intelligence (AI), sometimes called machine intelligence, is intelligence demonstrated by machines, in contrast to the natural intelligence displayed by humans and other animals. Computer science defines AI research as the study of "intelligent agents": any device that perceives its environment and takes actions that maximize its chance of successfully achieving its goals. Colloquially, the term "artificial intelligence" is applied when a machine mimics "cognitive" functions that humans associate with other human minds, such as "learning" and "problem-solving".

Creator of AI John McCarthy, the American scientist defines AI as-
The science and engineering of making intelligent machines, especially intelligent computer programs.

Thus AI is the process of creating smart machines which will aid in our day to day work and help in the development of future technology.

Uses of AI

Modern machine capabilities generally classified as AI include successfully understanding human speech, competing at the highest level in strategic computer game systems, autonomously operating cars, and intelligent routing in content delivery networks and military simulations.
AI is used widely in our:

  • Smartphones
  • Smart Cars (Tesla's electric automatic cars)
  • Drones (surveying and military)
  • Social media feeds and management
  • Google ads service
  • Uses in Media, music apps (Netflix, Amazon Prime, YouTube)
  • Video games
  • Travelling and maps (Uber, Google maps, Zomato)
  • Medical aid & surgery
  • Banking & Finance
  • Fraud detection & surveillance
  • Smart home devices
  • Facial & Speech recognition & Security
Huge data is processed and churned by the AI which is maintained by the Engineers. And that later becomes the database for the computer to do the decision making by itself.

Challenges Ahead

From the time of
Isaac Asimov in the 1940s till date the robots have taken hold of our imagination. We dream of a robot capable of doing all the human works and which will never demand wages or leave or any concession. On our command, it'll do almost anything that is legal.

A huge part is in making the computer and AI legal and moral. It will be able to think on its own but it should keep the moral and ethical values intact. It should never break the law of the land nor should harm a living being.

The world as shown in Matrix or Terminator series is too far out now, and if we work on the right path it'll be as it was meant to be. To help and aid humanity. We will get the perfect harmony and balance between machines and humans.

What is Responsive Web Design and why its a necessity?

What is a Responsive Web design?

Responsive Web design is a technique whereby a designer creates a website that responds to or resizes itself depending on the type of device it is being seen through, automatically. It could be an oversized desktop computer monitor, a laptop or devices with small screens such as smartphones, iPhones and tablets.

Responsive Web design is now an essential tool for anyone or any organization with a digital presence. With the growth of smartphones, tablets and other mobile computing devices, more people are using smaller-screens to view web pages.

Responsive web design lets you have one website, but with different elements that respond differently when viewed on devices of different sizes and width.

Why you need a Responsive Website?

A non-responsive Website will appear distorted when viewed on different handheld devices. And the contents of your webpage will be lost, hidden or will be out of context on a mobile phone or tablet.
Also due to the portrait or landscape view the Front-end design will not appear as you had wished for.
Also, your website will be slow to load and may hang every time a new page is loaded.

Which is very unprofessional and you will loose your valuable customers and clients. Thus, taking a toll on your business and brand.

So to keep your visitors and customers on your site one has to create different apps for Android, Ios and windows devices. But that is time-consuming and also non-profitable. So as to have your website available to all the users and gather more you need to have a responsive design.

But, if a website uses responsive design, the tablet or mobile version will automatically adjust to display contents accordingly. That way, the content is readable and easy to navigate. According to the device, the page will become one column or two columns based and images and video will be resized to fit the device.

The point is: with responsive design, the website automatically adjusts based on the device the viewer sees it in.

What is SEO and why it's a hot topic?

Search Engine Optimization

What is SEO?

Search engine optimization or SEO is the process of affecting the online visibility of a website or a web-page in a search engine's results—often referred to as "natural", "organic", or "earned" results. SEO is of two types: paid & unpaid.

Paid ones are not generally advised as it can contain various malicious links and apps, whereas the unpaid or natural SEO is the one you should look for, as its demanded the world over. In general, the website ranked higher on the search results page will get more views and the customers are mostly to be attained by that website. These visitors can then be transformed into customers.

SEO targets different kinds of search, including image search, video search, academic search, news search, and industry-specific search. SEO differs from local search engine optimization in that the latter is focused on optimizing a business' online presence so that its web pages will be displayed by search engines when a user enters a local search for its products or services. The former instead is more focused on national or international audience.

SEO considers how different search engines work, the computer programmed algorithms which dictate search engine behavior, what people search for, the actual search terms or keywords typed into search engines, and which search engines are preferred by their targeted audience.

Why you need SEO?

In this Information Age the world has transformed into a global village. Businesses are now interconnected across the globe. The successful businesses are growing by attracting the customers all over the world to their website.

Having a website not only solves the question to gather more audience if they cannot find you in the huge galaxy of world wide web. A website not indexing on the fist page of search engines will make you loose out the customers and visitors.

Thus its important to index or make yourself visible in the different search engines. The web-pages found in the top of Google, Yahoo Search, Bing etc. will be found out by customers each time they log into their device for internet surfing. Thus you will not loose your visitors & customers and your efforts will be rewarded.
