The Begining of a Revolution

The Internet as we see it today was completely different back in the late 1980s. The idea was developed in the Cold War era when both the USA & USSR were in a technical race and to showcase their greatness in the Scientific world. 

The concept of the Internet begins with the development of electronic computers in the 1950s. Initial concepts of wide area networking originated in several computer science laboratories in the United States, United Kingdom, and France. The U.S. Department of Defense developed the ARPANET project, directed by Robert Taylor and managed by Lawrence Roberts. The first message was sent over the ARPANET in 1969 and became operational.

In the 1980s, researchers at CERN in Switzerland, the British computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee resulted in the World Wide Web (the base & schema of the Internet), linking hypertext documents into an information system, accessible from any node on the network. And from 1993 onwards it was available to be used all over the world by anyone for free.

In December 1990, an application called WorldWideWeb was developed on a NeXT machine at The European Organization for Nuclear Research (known as CERN) just outside of Geneva. This program – WorldWideWeb — is the antecedent of most of what we consider or know of as "the web" or "the Net" today.

The 1st website that was made live for CERN was http://info.cern.ch/ It was for the scientists at CERN so they can easily upload and share their data and works.

Role of the Internet

The Internet is the biggest world-wide communication network of computers and computing devices. The Internet has millions of smaller domestic, academic, business, commercial and government networks, which together carry many different kinds of information. The term is sometimes abbreviated as "the Net". The World Wide Web is one of its biggest services. It is used by billions of people all over the world and each day the users are growing. 

The Internet is used for a lot of services nowadays, from file sharing to documents handling, to information sharing to entertainment, from business to e-commerce sites, from complex web applications to microblogging and social media sites.

Now each and everything is present on the Internet. From an MNC to Governments, from a celebrity to an ordinary person, all are connected with the Internet.

After the advent of Smartphones and superfast data services in 4G, broadband, WiFi and beyond the reach of the Internet has increased manifold. 

The Journey So far

From the laboratories of CERN to the palm of a kid the Internet has changed a lot. The HTTP (Hyper-text Transfer Protocol) and the HTML (Hypertext markup language) which makes the bare bone of websites has gone a lot of changes.

The World Wide Web is governed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) which was Developed by Tim Berners-Lee which sets the guidelines and syntax of the websites.

The websites and the internet have now become: 

• Available on any device, for any type of information,
• Available in any language.
• Accessible by people with disabilities.
• Royalty-free and built on open standards.
• Powerful application
• Huge visual appeal and User experience (UX)

The earliest browser was The Netscape browser (in 1992), then later I.E. came a couple of years later with the windows OS. Later in early 200s Mozilla and safari came with the latest Web browser and in 2008 Google Chrome was introduced.

The popular brands of today like Amazon, Google, Wikipedia, Facebook etc. started in 1994, 1998, 2001, 2005 respectively.

Internet uses lots of programming languages like HTML, CSS, Java, JavaScript, JQuery, PHP, ASP.NET, Python, Angular and many more to get our desired websites.

The countries like the USA, China, and India are leading the number of charts with the most nos. of websites and users. Also, the developing world now is getting more users on the Internet each day.

The Challenges and the Road Ahead 

Websites and the Internet have made a room in our day-to-day life. We are dependent on the Internet for information, file/data sharing, online chatting, entertainment and live streaming of videos and music, doing online transactions and e-shopping amongst many more.

But there are challenges too:

• Some webpages may trick people into downloading viruses or malware that can harm one's computer or spyware that spies on its users (looks at what they are doing and tells someone else). 
• E-mails and messages can also have harmful files with them as "attachments", which can crash your system or get your personal details.
• In internet chatrooms, people might be preying on others or trying to stalk or abuse them or troll others.
• The Internet contains content that many people find offensive such as pornography, as well as content intended to be offensive.
• Criminals and scammers may steal people's personal information or trick people into sending them money.
• Blue Whale and Momo Game trick young ones to oblivion.
• Hacking of personal sites and company profiles.

Also, there is a world of Dark Web where all sort of illegal practices takes place, from child pornography to illegal arms trade to trade of narcotics etc. to Cryptocurrencies and many immoral and illegal activities are done within the confines of worlds wide web.

The recent rise of ISIS, fundamentalism, and terrorism was attributed to the role of the Internet and various illegal groups carry out their activities and get more recruits through the Internet.

The debate about Net-neutrality and the role of governments across the world has a role to play in the future.
